桥梁可定义为:跨越河川、渠道、山区、谷地、溪谷、湖泊、海峡、市街、公路、铁路等障碍而构筑人行、公路、铁路、捷运或水路之通道,其构造物之总称。与模板相仿的是,目前桥梁的「梁」字,在工程统一用字上,应采用「梁」字,而非「梁」字,交通部颁布之「公路桥梁设计规范」及「公路桥梁耐震设计规范」即采用「梁」字。
